Welcome to Gloucestershire 4x4 Response Team PDF Print E-mail

Gloucestershire 4x4 Response Team was devised and set up during 2006 by responsible 4 wheel drive users wishing to do more to help our local community and services. Gloucestershire is very much a rural county and has a diverse climate and terrain. We recognised the need for a volunteer group ready to respond to incidents arising our locality. With the majority of our members residing around Cheltenham and Gloucester we are very aware of how weather conditions in a small area e.g. Crickley Hill, can have much larger implications for the wider area... traffic congestion due to snow/flooding can have much greater knock on effects for quite a number of people. So, with this in mind we offer our services to the local councils and emergency services as well as other user services such as Meals on Wheel, British Red Cross, St John Ambulance etc.

Gloucestershire 4x4 Response Team is a registered Charity number 1127785.

Who are we and what do we do? PDF Print E-mail

Gloucestershire 4x4 Response Team was devised and set up during 2006 by a couple of members of a responsible 4 wheel drive association.

So, with this in mind we decided to offer our services to the local councils and emergency services. We offer our members assistance with 4x4 driving and recovery skills as well as developing links with RAYNET registered operatives.

We have assisted Gloucestershire Primary Care Trust, Great Western Ambulance, British Red Cross and Gloucestershire Police, as well as provided mutual assistance to our neighbouring group Wessex 4x4 Response. We can be called upon in an emergency/weather situation 24 hours a day, 365 day a year via our dedicated call out number and contact details.

Training - Basic Map Reading PDF Print E-mail

At the December group meeting a desktop map-reading exercise was completed by 14 of the members.

Questions included understanding Ordnance Survey Grid References, location from landmarks using Back Bearings, reading heights and slopes from contour lines, calculating distances and understanding map symbols.

This exercise was done to test the basic navigation skills of members as part of the core skills required for the group and it will be used as part of the training needs analysis for the group.

Training needs identified for navigation will be further explored and training given where neccessary via further tests and navigation exercises both desk based and in the field.

Average score from 15 questions was 78%.
